Prosthetics Protection
The Project produces tailor made prostheses for
people affected by leprosy who have had limbs amputated. We are
grateful for the technical support from Handa (another project working
with leprosy patients in Southern China headquartered in Guangzhou).
Handa provides a technician who visits Liangshan every year to produce
prostheses. They also offer maintenance on an as needed basis.
We aim to provide amputees with a brand new prosthesis every two years. In addition we provide orthopaedic devices, crutches to those who require them, and occasionally wheelchairs if they can be useful in the area the person is living. Since most people affected by leprosy have sensory impairment, protection of the feet is crucial in order to prevent injury or deterioration of ulcers and wounds. The project supplies people affected by leprosy a pair of protective shoes every quarter together with socks and gloves; the shoes are all specially made to fit deformed feet. |
