Prevention of Disabilities

Leprosy itself is completely curable and if diagnosed and treated early will leave no lasting effect.  Unfortunately due to a lack of good medical facilities and the stigma attached to the disease most people do not seek treatment until the side-affects have become noticeable and severe.  These include loss of sensitivity in the extremities, disfigurement of hands and feet, and collapsed noses.  These severe physical disabilities are not reversible and last a lifetime.  One of the main interventions of the project involves the prevention of further disabilities through:

  • Providing hygiene education and self-care training to people affected by leprosy

  • Monitoring the conditions of the ulcers and following up on severe cases referring them for  medical or surgical treatments when needed

  • Deploying healthcare workers in the villages, and supporting self-care schemes for people affected by leprosy and taking care of the day to day injuries from which they suffer

  • Helping manage the village clinics, and providing orthotic shoes and POD supplies

  • Promoting better management for difficult cases of leprosy, and other medical problems indirectly related to the leprosy in the villages

  • Teaching them how to prevent injury and to clean their wounds and ulcers on daily basis
